The Tayside Safety Camera Partnership (TSCP) was launched in July 2003 with the aim of reducing the number of road casualties on Tayside’s roads by encouraging and educating motorists to drive within permitted speed limits. It will do this by clearly promoting the objectives of the scheme and through the use of safety cameras situated in areas where there is a proven incidence of collisions and excessive speed

TSCP is a partnership of Angus Council, Dundee City Council, Perth and Kinross Council, the Scottish Executive and Tayside Police with support from NHS Tayside, Tayside Fire and Rescue and the Scottish Ambulance Service.

Following the success of eight pilot projects throughout the UK, including one in the Strathclyde police area, the Government invited other partnerships to participate in the initiative. As a result the TSCP was launched.

Its main aim is to make the roads of Tayside safer for everyone. In the year 2003/4 there were 37 deaths, 286 serious injuries and more than 1000 injuries as a result of collisions on the roads in Tayside. While the cost in terms of time and resources to the emergency services and the NHS is considerable, the human cost – the trauma, grief and pain caused as a result of a collision - is immeasurable.

Research has shown a direct link between speed and injury collisions and Government estimates show an average speed reduction of only 1% will lead to a 5% reduction in casualties. (Source: Transport Research Laboratory 1994 and 2000.)

Speed cameras are an effective tool against the problem of speeding motorists.
