Cameras

The main remit of TSCP is to reduce the number of people killed or injured in road traffic collisions on the roads that run through Angus, Dundee and Perth and Kinross.

One of the primary means of reducing road casualties is to enforce the posted speed limits on roads where there is a history of collisions and evidence of vehicles travelling at excessive speeds. TSCP does this through the use of fixed safety cameras installed at the roadside and mobile safety cameras that are mounted in safety camera vehicles.

When discussing where safety camera enforcement takes place there are three terms to be aware of:

Camera Location:

This is the actual position on a road that speed limit enforcement takes place i.e. it is where a fixed camera is installed or where the safety camera vehicle is parked. A table of current safety camera locations and maps of their whereabouts are available on this website. It is the Camera Location that is named on the Notice of Intended Prosecution.

Safety Camera Site:

This refers to a length of road with a clearly defined start and end point on which safety camera deployment takes place at one, or more, Camera Locations. The precise requirements for establishing a new Safety Camera Site are set out in the Scottish Safety Camera Programme’s Handbook of Rules and Guidance. Monitoring of collisions and vehicle speeds takes place within the Safety Camera Site, with the hope of evidencing a reduction in both.

Safety Camera Route:

Previous versions of the Handbook of Rules and Guidance allowed for the creation of Safety Camera Routes on roads where three or more Safety Camera Sites had been established. This allowed Safety Camera Partnerships to enforce along the entire length of the defined Route not just within the bounds of the Safety Camera Sites. There are seven Safety Camera Routes within Tayside, all of which have delivered a significant benefit in terms of casualty reduction. The SSCPO is currently reviewing the criteria for creating new Safety Camera Routes.
